Do you ever feel this way, like you are the only sane person in the World? How about when you watch the news, do you often feel like the World has really gone crazy? How about watching the politicians on TV, do you often develop powerful emotions against one party or the other?
What about the neighborhood you live in, do you think most of your neighbors are a little off?
You might even have feelings like this about people in your Church or Temple.
Observing this in meditation this morning, I realized how these judgements are formed in my mind almost constantly. Thoughts that create separation and feed the ego.
So is there some truth to this thinking, that “I” am better than anyone else? My thinking is clearer and has more wisdom than others?
I can see these type of thoughts and opinions arising hundreds of time a day in my own mind. And while I have come to the point where I have dropped these mental formations, I have learned to become increasingly aware of them. And I think this may be the key to one day eliminating these judgements and separations that I create.
Now I know that some of you may think this is just the nature of our minds, and completely normal to do this. And while I agree it is “normal”, it does not make it right. And on a path to awakening, this can only be accomplished by accepting our connectedness. Dropping the delusion that there is a separate you and me, this or that, good and bad.
I have spoken before about the ability for each of us to re-mold our brain. And this is a prime example of one of the ways we can accomplish this. Awareness of these judgments, acceptance that we are all just living beings with thoughts, emotions, feelings and suffering.
Each time we are able to be mindful of these judgements rising in our minds, we have an opportunity to drop them and be connected to another living being. Slowly, I believe this can one day eliminate any separation that we may ignorantly believe exists.
May you be well, happy and peaceful.
If you want to awaken all of humanity, awaken all of yourself. If you want to eliminate the suffering in the world, then eliminate all that is dark and negative in yourself. Truly, the greatest gift you have to give is that of your own self-transformation.
