The rebel yell

rebel

Rebel: to resist or rise against some authority, control, or tradition.

The longer I practice, the more I begin to understand that this is a solitary one. Words are often inadequate, and can even be harmful although offered with the best intention. In addition, there are so many teachings and different traditions, that anyone can easily become confused and frustrated. While at the same time, adhering to one particular school becomes dogmatic and separatist. Hence I believe that a call to rebel is in order. Not rebellion against the teachings, but against the attachment or clinging to ideals, methods, traditions or culture. Becoming a rebel who is accepting and nonjudgmental of all other beings.

Bhante Sujatha continues to be my inspiration in regard to inclusivity and acceptance. Not only has his foundation of the Blue Lotus Temple been created by this, but he created a revolution of loving kindness without ideology. Simply by loving and accepting all living beings without judgement, Bhante Sujatha has been a supreme living example to me and thousands of other around the World. And most amazingly to me, is that he does this with very few words. No need to talk endlessly, or discuss every issue, angle and possibility. But typically with a huge smile and open heart, the lessons are given so clearly and freely. No expectations or judgements, no right or wrong, just the encouragement that he offers by living his life in this way. Bhante Sujatha too, is also a rebel in my opinion. But certainly a rebel with a cause. And while I do not speak for Bhante, it clearly appears to me that his mission is to offer a path of peace and happiness to as many human beings as he can touch during his lifetime. At least to open the doorway for them.

I too wish to be a rebel. One who does not cling to anything which is judgmental or exclusive. Choosing my words carefully, and always minding my thoughts. And I think that a well-tended mind is truly the beginning to a path which offers peace to myself and an example to others. A rebel who is not against nor for you, but one who has the opportunity to tear down walls with each breath. This is my rebel yell.

“No one saves us but ourselves, no one can and no one may.
We ourselves must walk the path but Buddhas clearly show the way”
