A Mothers love

Mother
Metta is the protective and immensely patient attitude of a mother who forbears all difficulties for the sake of her child and ever protects it despite its misbehavior. Metta is also the attitude of a friend who wants to give one the best to further one’s well-being. If these qualities of metta are sufficiently cultivated through metta-bhavana — the meditation on universal love — the result is the acquisition of a tremendous inner power which preserves, protects and heals both oneself and others. (Acharya Buddharakkhita)

On this Mothers Day, I think about how deeply and profoundly our Mothers affect our World.
Not only do they give us life so they we may come into this World, feed us, protect us, comfort us. But our Mothers give us something even greater with their perfect example of loving kindness (metta).

As I sat in meditation this morning, I gave extra time and intention towards my own Mother. I could see so very clearly the power of her love that has radiated far beyond her physical years on this earth. Her love is a huge part of who you see today as David. And even greater is how this love has permeated the lives of my children and their children. Even my youngest Daughter, who never got to meet my Mother, has a deep and loving connection to her.
It is only now, so many years after my Mom has passed, that I clearly see the scope and breadth of a Mothers love.

Our Mothers each go about their day, tirelessly offering their unconditional love, compassion, understanding, wisdom and acceptance. No reward is expected, this is simply the purity of their love for their Family. To protect and comfort us, to feed not only our bodies but also our hearts. To nourish each of us as most special, unique, and most loved. This is a Mothers love. A gardener who tends ever so gently to the garden which is the Family. So that each may grow strong and upright, feeling the gentle warmth of the sun, and be the seeds for future generations.

For my Mother, my children’s Mothers, and every Mother today, I offer my immense gratitude and love.
Your love is immense, warm and selfless. You are a light to the World, not only today, but for so many generations to come.

May you be the recipient of all good things, and may you be well, happy and peaceful.
